Break Free…and Start Living Life to the Fullest
June 2nd, 2009 by MilesVickstrom
A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write if he is ultimately to be at peace with himself.
~ Abraham Maslow ~
Do you sometimes feel like you are chained up in a cage? Or feel like you are inside prison walls?
If so, why do you think that is?
Is it possible that you are not being completely true to yourself? That you are living a lie?
In other words, could it be that you are not living who you âreallyâ are? Not doing what makes you happy or what makes you at peace with yourself?
Listenâ¦
Listen closely to the answer you get from within.
Do you hear a voice saying yes? Then you know something’s not right.
Now, the question isâ¦
When are you going to start paying closer attention to that voice? That part of you that’s crying out for help? That part of you that’s constantly begging to be set free?
And, more importantly, when are you going to start doing something about it?
When are you going to start doing what you love? What you enjoy? What gives you a deep sense of fulfillment? What makes you feel whole?
When are you going to put into practice William Shakespeare’s good advice below?
~~~~~~
This above all: to thine own self be true.
~~~~~~
The truth is, you can start nowâ¦right nowâ¦just by deciding.
You don’t need anyone’s permissionâ¦except your own.
You can start doing and living what makes your heart sing.
(I’m sure you can remember many times when you felt intense joy…when you felt complete. When things just felt rightâ¦very right. When deep down inside you, a part of you said something like: “Yes, this is what I love. This is what I am meant to do.” Well, there’s no reason why you can’t have that feeling all the time.)
You don’t need to remain chained up (or to continue living a lie). You don’t have to allow society or others to dictate the way you should live, the type of work you should pursue, the types of activities you should give priority to, and so on.
No, you don’t have to stay helpless inside that cageâ¦inside those prison walls.
You have a choice.
You can decide, here and now, to break free. To do what you loveâ¦and to do it as often as you wish.
Who cares about the past? Leave it behind you. That’s where it belongs.
You can decide to live life to the fullestâ¦starting today.
Remember, it’s “your” life. And you don’t have to give power to anyone (or anything) over it.
(Although others may be well-intentioned when they try to discourage you from pursuing what you love-thinking they know what’s best for you-it is “you”â¦and not themâ¦who will end up either happy or miserableâ¦in the short-termâ¦and in the long-term. I mean, just imagine what it would be like, if one day, in the future, you looked back and couldn’t help but say, “I wish I had lived my life differentlyâ¦pursued what I truly love. I wish I didn’t allow others to dictate the course of my life. ‘Cause then I wouldn’t be so miserable today.”)
~~~~~~
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.
~ Mark Twain ~
~~~~~~
“You decide” how you should live your life (of course, always making sure that your motives and actions are in line with what pleases God).
Life is shortâ¦fleetingâ¦like a vapor. (George Mateljan knew this when he said: Life is too short to spend time doing anything except what you are passionate about.)
So live life to the fullest. Do whatever makes your heart singâ¦whatever makes you at peace with yourself. (And remember to contribute to others in positive ways whenever you can.)
Do it nowâ¦while there’s still time.

Would do you think of my poem, do I have a future as a working poet?
I just need a second wind
To start a new Life
And begin again
But this excess baggage
Keeps holding me back
Keeping me off track
But not for long
I feel a new attitude
Comin on
Breaking free
To rise to the top
Not letting any outside influences
Or negative distortions hold me back anymore!
I’m going to unfold
Explore
Set goals
Adore
MYSELF
Be free
Free of the negativity that breaks you apart
No! I’m making a new start
Looking for love of ME
Satisfied as to who I am
To soar above the foolishness
To stop…
And allow the happiness
Yes, I just need a second wind
To start a new life and begin again
To be ME
To be FREE
To have PEACE…mmm, mmm, mmm
To be a strong black woman of understanding
Nurturing and full of pride
Steadily holding inner strength
To ride the wave of life
Full of strife and antiquities of sorrow
No longer will I let that hold me down
I’m picking myself up off the ground
And live
LIVE
LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!!!
Ahhhhhhhhhh!
Now I have my second wind
I have began to live again
To be ME
To be FREE and in PEACE…

I think that it is a great poem! But in my opinion, some parts just don't really flow. If you worked on those parts, I think it would be awesome!

I think the style shifts a great deal between stanzas, which can sometimes work to your advantage. Since your speaker is starting out rundown, you might want to show the process of getting a second wind and becoming inspired again. Use the words to show your readers what is going on, as opposed to telling us directly what you want us. Show over tell is one of the most powerful devices you can employ as a poet. Experiment with this piece, and believe that you have ever reason to be proud of it no matter what you do. As for making a living at poetry, even the greatest poets find it difficult, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't go for it!

I think your poem is eloquent, beautiful and full of thought from the heart. It reflects true talent and I hope you nurture that talent and continue to write, It touched me, and inspired me to give thought to my own life. Bravo!

You have a good thing going, Just needs a little editing. Very Inspirational and can be applied to anyone with the substitution of certain words.

It's very sing songy….I think it would make a really nice inspirational song with a bit of editing.
Whitney would knock it off the charts.

I just loved it! I am a little older than you are, I can tell, if that means anything. Keep writing, as i have read nothing lately as up-lifting and inspirational and refreshing as that is, good luck in your endeavors, and may God bless, as Red Skelton used to say at the close of his TV shows.

hey it's really good you might have a chance but like my professor always says " You can never be satisfied until your work is the best it can be" meaning never give up on your dreams and keep adding to your poem and making changes until you're sure it's your personality and your work of art.
great job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
