Will most baby boomers truly retire? The old mainstays of golf, grandkids and travel haven’t been enough to satisfy many retirees from previous generations. In August 2005, Putnam Investments performed a retirement survey called “Working in Retirement.” Most of the retirees surveyed returned to work after an average of only 18 months of retirement. Of those who returned, 32% cited financial need, while 68% did so voluntarily.

The return to work may signal a problem that most retirees don’t anticipate: having something fulfilling to do. The keyword is fulfilling, and it’s the driving force behind a return to work. The phenomenon has become so recognized that In areas with large and increasing populations of retirees, like Arizona, many employers are catering to the retired crowd. With all the chemicals and artificial air fresheners, pesticides, scented laundry products, and disinfectants, living a normal or pain free life is almost impossible in the cases of people with this illness. Simple facts like just tacking a walk have to be carefully monitored and planed ahead not to come across dangerous chemicals or pollutants that may aggravate the state of the person. A difficult and lonely life is the life of those that struggle with terrible disease. The simple fact is that patients with fibromylagia are prevented from living life at its fullest, the way it should be.

Unfortunately, in todays world it is not difficult for a pet dog to get injured. Margaret Donaldson sat in the living room of her smart 3 bedroom home near Fulham Road in London. Her eyes were watery and her hands shook as she finally signed the sale papers of her house; the very house where her life, her dreams and her hopes had taken root.

She remembered when, almost ten years to the day, when she, a receptionist in a small company married Michael, who was the Sales Manager in her company. She remembered their wedding day, the vows, her friends, her relations, everyone. Her honeymoon with life had just begun.

It seemed like only yesterday when Michael had grabbed her in his arms and carried her into this very house. Michael was so charming, so full of fun and energy and there was never a dull moment in Margaret’s life.

Margaret remembered the days when she had brought her two sons, David and Jonathan, into their lives. She remembered the joys of raising her two boys and how Michael helped her in their parental duties every step of the way.

Michael was a good husband and a great father. He spared no expense to ensure that his sons went to the best schools, he worked overtime to repay the mortgage on their modest property. He had done everything in his power and ability to keep his family happy. Margaret had never felt the need to work nor did she develop any new life skills.

And then, out of the blue, Margaret’s life changed forever. Michael was diagnosed with an aggressive type of cancer. The hospital did its best to cure him; they tried chemotherapy, radiation, etc. Nothing helped and within a month, Michael had passed away, leaving his loved ones behind.

And that is when Margaret’s honeymoon with life really ended.

Whenever the bread winner in any family passes away, everything boils down to money. Michael had not protected himself financially and had neither health insurance nor life cover. He’d always believed that he was too young and it would be something he’d get around to. He didn’t leave much behind. The schooling and the living costs ate up his salary and all that was left was the house. The very place where Margaret had lived her life and now she was being forced to sell.

Margaret had to sell the house to pay debts. There were school fees due. Then there was that loan Margaret had taken from a friend to pay the funeral expenses. After that, there were the daily living expenses. And there was no one to provide for the house.

Margaret was starting life all over again. A life where she needed to work, where she needed to pick up new skills and a life that would never be the same again.

The IRS understands that you need to save for retirement. Often your nest egg builds faster if you don’t have to pay taxes on retirement savings until you are ready to retire and withdraw your money. The idea is that you will be in a lower tax bracket once you retire. The money is taxed as it is withdrawn.

Retirement accounts through your employer, such as 401(k)s and company sponsored IRAs, give you added benefits. Your contributions to your account are made in pretax dollars, which means that you are saving more than if you only contributed after-tax dollars. Because you deduct your contributions from your gross income, you are paying less in taxes.

There are other accounts, such as Roth IRAs, that allow you to contribute after-tax dollars. Your earnings grow tax free because you’ve already paid the taxes on your contribution. When you withdraw the money, you don’t have to pay any taxes.

There are several tax-advantaged retirement plans to help you save for your future.

Individual Retirement Accounts

Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) give you a great way to build tax-deferred savings for your retirement. An IRA is not an investment, it is an account. Within the account is a mixture of the investments that you want – stocks, CDs, mutual funds, cash and bonds. You can have any mixture of investments you want, and everything except options and other derivatives.

Employees can no longer plan for their future based on the promise of Social Security and pension plans. As corporate America has switched to “defined contribution” retirement plans, the American worker is on his own for saving for retirement.

“Defined contribution” plans specify the maximum amount an employee can contribute to a plan, but they do not guarantee any amount of payout. A “defined benefit” means that the company’s plan guarantees a specific payout. In general, the burden of funding your retirement is no longer with an employer, but with you.

The Traditional IRA

The traditional IRA is the most popular form of an IRA. Anyone under the age of 70 ½, with earned income, can open and invest in a traditional IRA. There are limits to how much you can contribute to your IRA each year.

If you don’t have a retirement plan at work, you will be rewarded for making contributions to an IRA. You can deduct your IRA contributions from your gross income for tax purposes. It lowers your Adjusted Gross Income, which means you are taxed at a lower amount of income. You earnings in an IRA will grow tax-deferred until you withdraw them at retirement.

Even if you are covered by a retirement plan at work, you can contribute to an IRA. The contributions are not tax deductible, but the earnings still grow tax-deferred.

You can begin withdrawing money, called taking distributions, beginning at age 59 ½ if the account has been open for at least five years. If you opened the account at age 55, you will have to wait until you are 60 to take distributions. You are required to begin taking minimum distributions by April 1 of the year after you turn 70 ½.

The disadvantage of IRAs falls here. The distributions are taxed as ordinary income.

Since IRAs are set up for your retirement and withdrawals before the age 59 ½ are taxed as ordinary income and charged with an IRS penalty of 10%. There are some exceptions. You may be able to withdraw money penalty-free before the age of 59 ½ to buy your first home, pay for higher education or extraordinary medical costs, or because of disability or death.

You can take a penalty-free loan from your IRA, but you have to start to repay the money within 60 days or pay taxes and a 10 % IRS penalty.

Roth IRA

Contributions to a Roth IRA are not tax deductible, you use after-tax money. The earnings will still grow tax free. Unlike a traditional IRA, you may withdraw your contributions at any time without penalty. You aren’t required to take distributions until you want to.

The limits of how much you can contribute to your Roth IRA are similar to traditional IRAs. As long as you have earned income that is equal to the amount of your contribution and you meet the income restrictions, you can open a Roth IRA. You are allowed to have a Roth IRA even if you already have a traditional IRA and a 401(k).

The biggest advantage to the Roth IRA is that your withdrawals are tax free. If you are a smart investor and manage your account successfully, this could really pay off for you. You can open either a traditional IRA or a Roth IRA through any brokerage firm, bank, credit union or mutual fund company.

You can either start a Roth IRA by opening a new account and funding it with new money or convert assets from a traditional IRA to a Roth. If you convert a traditional IRA to a Roth you will have to pay the taxes on the money before it goes into the Roth. You have to know how you will pay the tax on the earnings from the IRA. The money is taxed as ordinary income. You don’t necessarily want to use money from within the IRA to pay the taxes; you will sacrifice your investment potential by doing so. You can convert your IRA to a Roth IRA a piece at a time, giving you the ability to pay the taxes gradually.

Self-directed IRA

If you set an IRA with a brokerage it is considered a “self-directed” IRA. You decide how the money will be invested, in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, certificates of deposit or even in real estate.

Any brokerage can help you open a self-directed IRA. Brokerage websites have plenty of information on the necessary steps. You can either fund your IRA with new money or roll over a company-sponsored retirement plan into it. Make sure if you roll over your retirement plan that they send the check directly to the brokerage. If you receive the money in your name, you could be taxed and penalized by the IRS. The brokerage will give you all of the necessary details.

SEP-IRA (Simplified Employee Pension)

A SEP-IRA is a company sponsored IRA that can be opened by the smallest of businesses and the sole proprietor. With this plan, an employer can contribute to his or her own retirement plus to an employee’s existing IRA. The employee IRAs are owned and controlled by the employee. The employer is simply making contributions to the financial institution that maintains the IRA.

SEP-IRAs are subject to the same taxes and withdrawals penalties as are traditional IRAs. The employer receives a tax deduction for all contributions made. These IRAs are flexible. The employer doesn’t have to contribute on a regular schedule, every year.

SIMPLE IRA (Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees)

Small businesses up to 100 or fewer employees who make at least $5,000 each can set up this company sponsored plan. This can be set up at a company designated financial institution or at any institution chosen by the employee. The SIMPLE is a savings incentive match plan. The employer matches or non-elective contributions to the employees plan.

The moment we awaken we begin the stressful tack of choice and decision making and before the days end we have attempted to restore some internal peace of mind over choices made.

Regardless if our choices are emotional or intellectual we seem to go through a process of tricking ourselves into thinking we made the right decision in order to establish some peace of mind. As consumers we wrestle with ill feelings of fear in our stomach many times because of our decisions – which is commonly referred to as buyer’s remorse.

Fear of making wrong decisions and choices becomes a major challenge in life and business everyday.

My clients struggle with different and difficult fears everyday in making choices that require changing habits, attitudes and behaviors. In the words of JC who has been a smoker for more than 10 years and a client our company said: Every time I light up a cigarette I read the warning sign on the package. I stop for a moment and ask myself why am I smoking? Then I reason with my mind that I don’t smoke that much and I get plenty of exercise and my grandfather smoked well into his 90’s giving me some peace of mind until the next time I light up a cigarette. But regardless, of the mind game I play, the fear of cancer lurks deep within me.

People I work with daily who struggle with their fear of making choices have become very creative at attempting to reduce mental tension for their choices and decisions. But, in doing so, they have brought on deepening negative behaviors of procrastination, uncertainty, guilt and greater stress into their lives.

Fear and not willing to make good choices has stopped people dead in their tracks from accomplishing great things in their life. In addition to the fear people are confronted with. There are two other issues that come into play while making daily choices that bring in more mental tension. That is the issue of money and time.

Every endeavor in life and business that produces accomplishment requires some degree of investment in time, money and resources. The one major reason people procrastinate over choice and don’t take immediate and consistent action and the biggest inhibitor in creating wealth, happiness and living life exactly the way want it — is fear.

As you listen or read this article your may be saying to yourself right now — I don’t fear making more money and having more success. I’m not afraid of making better choices for having greater happiness in life. I don’t fear having a wonderful committed relationship and living exactly the way I want to. But, if you want to make more money and create wealth, and you haven’t, then fear in getting your way. If you are always struggling on the path to happiness and living your life well and you haven’t done it — then the choices you make are being influence by your fears.

As for time: There are some people being so busy living a life of pain, procrastination, quilt, fear, disbelief, and anger that their time is consumed with lack and limitation instead of abundance.

As for the money: most people work for money their whole life and will use lack of money, regardless of their net worth, as an excuse for their choices. They trick themselves into some peace of mind to stifle the guilt or embarrassment for their decisions. If they do it long enough it become habitual and their self deception becomes almost guiltless and unnoticed within. Needles to say in the process of tricking ourselves to justify daily choices in order to establish some peace of mind is not the solution. What needs to happen for you is to begin acting in accordance with not only your true conviction but with your true desires and honest reasons.

While questioning JC about her smoking I discovered that her greatest fear was not cancer. Her two greatest fears where gaining weight after she quit smoking and her fear of spending money with no guarantee she would quit. JC’s desire to quit smoking was strong but her fears were much stronger causing her to play self sabotaging mind games.

While we my believe that our greatest challenges, lie in wait outside of our control, the truth is the solutions to our greatest challenges are within each and every one of us. The solution is to confront the real problems not the symptoms.

Fast food restaurants may contribute to obesity in this country but not the problem. The problem is in the eating behaviors of people. A highly profitable and proven MLM business system may have hundreds of people who quit the business for lack of success. The failure is not in the business but the fear of rejection, call reluctance, passion, desire and lack of commitment in the people.

People can change quickly once they confront their fears and resolve the money and time issue. To achieve long-term behavioral change we must first reinforce our desires and goals with new attitudes of behavior and the quickest ways to change is through hypnosis which speeds up the learning process 2 to 5 time faster than will power.

When you confront your fears and have a burning desire, backed by belief your fears begin to diminish. Your mind becomes dominated with positive emotion, which gives shape, form and action to your projects or ideas with imagination. You then become unstoppable in your attainment of successfully accomplishing your goals.

Let me give you a challenge. Identify some behavior that you battle with in your mind. It could be smoking, procrastination, call reluctance, social anxiety, fear of flying, lack of motivation or what ever challenges you. Now carefully and truthfully examine the reason for ending that behavior and write them down. Next list all the benefits for change and write down your new behavior next to the benefits. Now make a commitment with clear intention to act out your new behavior. Avoid all the tempting situations that would have you act out your old behavior and see what happens.

For some of you the chance of making a positive change with a great deal of willpower will come forth in time. For others you’ll continue repeating old behaviors until you change your behavior and for that to happen you’ll need to change habits of thought. However, hypnosis will speed up and guarantee that change of behavior will come forth easier, quicker and effortlessly in less time.

Every single driver in the U.S. is required to have Car Insurance. And most of us drive around confident that we have adequate coverage to protect us should we ever be involved in an accident.

Yet, almost 97% of all drivers are not adequately protected….and don’t even know it. Here’s what I mean.

Let’s say you’re involved in an accident and it’s serious enough that the car is considered a “total loss” by your Insurance Company. Or, maybe your vehicle gets stolen. A few weeks later, you get a check from your Insurance Company.

Actual Cash Value means you’re going to get a get a check for….

“What it’s worth” not “What you owe.”

And like most, you owe quite a bit more than what the car or truck is worth. What would you owe your Bank or Credit Union if your car was totaled today?

So, how do you avoid this situation?

Well, when you buy a new or used vehicle, add a “rider” to your policy or purchase a separate “rider.”

If you have Homeowners or Rental insurance, a “rider” might sound familiar. For a homeowner’s policy, if you own expensive items, like fine jewelry, you need to add a rider to your policy. The reason – Insurance Companies won’t cover those types of items as part of a regular insurance policy.

So, you pay an extra $5 or $6 a month to have those items fully covered by the “rider.”

If anything ever happens to the jewelry, it gets replaced.

A rider for your car or truck is called GAP Insurance or GAP Protection. It’s just like the rider for your Home – except it’s only for cars, vans, trucks or suv’s.

It covers “What You Owe”, not “What its worth.”

It doesn’t matter what the reason is – if it’s ever totaled due to theft, fire, accident, flood, tornado, vandalism, hurricane, it’s covered – and paid-in-full!

You can protect yourself four different ways.

1. Put at least 20%-30% down on any new or used car purchase to erase any gap;

2. Purchase a “Rider” – AKA GAP Insurance from your Car Insurance Company or Bank;

3. Purchase Gap Insurance from another insurance Company;

4. Buy Gap Insurance from the Dealership you’re buying at.

Any one of these options is great way to protect yourself. Whether you’re getting ready to purchase a new car or truck, or purchased a vehicle in the last 12 months, make sure the “gap” between what your vehicle is worth and what you owe is covered.

Over the years you’re sure to have encountered someone who’s told you to put some money into a retirement fund if you haven’t yet already. Many parents are now telling their children who’ve just started to make money to put some away for when they retire. This is because it will amount to such a small percentage of your current income.

How much money you’ll need to save is calculated on a variety of different things, most importantly, how you’d like to spend your time. Traveling abroad, or staying near the grandkids. Living in a house you’ll have paid off, or adding a cottage by the lake. Really, it’s all about balancing what you want now with what you’ll want then: Bigger house now, or cottage on the lake then? In a perfect world, we’d all have the money for both, but that just isn’t the case sometimes so planning retirement should take you at least a few days worth of thinking, and it should be open to updates whenever something changes. Nothing about planning retirement should be set in stone.

There are many different avenues of income that are associated with retirement, some of which can have confusing terms. The term for saving for your retirement personally and then cashing it all in when you retire is called superannuation. This, unsurprisingly, is the most prominent form of planning retirement financially.

All in all, there’s no better time to start planning for your retirement than right now. Even if you’re not sure what your income will be like in the coming years, it always helps to write down what you think you’d like to be doing when you retire so that you’ll at least have an idea of how much money you’ll need. Though planning retirement can be stressful, remember that not having a plan when you’re suddenly 65 years old is far worse than doing a bit of number crunching now.

Once upon a time there was a divorce group for men and women that was a small part of a non-profit organization called Second Chance in Fremont, California. It was an extraordinary divorce group because the man who led the group was an extraordinary man. His real name was Skylar Moon. He had a Masters degree in psychology and a Masters degree in education, including post graduate work at the Kempler Institute of Psychology. When Skylar walked into a room, people turned around and stared at him with fascination because he had an immediately commanding presence. He was over six feet tall, he usually wore a leather sports jacket, dress shirt (but no tie) and jeans, and he always wore the same jaunty flat leather cap which partially covered his bald head. He often had a cigarillo either between his lips or held between his fingers as if he was about to smoke it. But he never lit it. Skylar looked like a skinny, bald, clean shaven version of Jimi Hendrix. His remarkable personality had a significant positive impact on everybody who had the good fortune to meet him.

New members of the divorce group were always in various stages of emotional devastation. Skylar was very gracious when he welcomed people into the group and he made them feel comfortable by introducing them to the other members and letting them know that they had just joined a group of new friends. But Skylar was a unique group leader because he fearlessly crossed over the line that the psychological profession has drawn in terms of restricting a therapist’s interaction to non-judgmental and unemotional empathic listening. He practiced a kind of emotional shock therapy that worked time after time. Typically, he would interrupt a regular group member’s sad tale of woe and say, “We’ve all heard this same old story one too many times. You’re like an old record that’s stuck in a groove and repeating the same line over and over again. You’re STUCK. You’re standing in your own bucket of excrement and complaining about how much it stinks. Do you want to know why you don’t get out of that bucket? (not waiting for an answer) It’s because you’re petrified with fear of what’s outside the bucket. You’ve grown accustomed to your own stench and you’re comfortable with it. When are you going to make a decision to change your life?” The usual reaction to his confrontation was stunned silence. People did not know how to react to something like that. But the next time they spoke, they would give Skylar all kinds of reasons why it would be so difficult, if not impossible, for them to resolve their financial, emotional, and legal issues. Skylar would interrupt their defensive maneuvering and say, “Be quiet. Just think about what I’ve told you. I’ll come back to you when you have something positive to say.”

Men often complained bitterly about the horrible things their spouses were doing to them and about how badly they were being hurt. Skylar would say, “Why does that surprise you? She hates you. She doesn’t even like you. She won’t even walk on the same side of the street with you. You’re acting like a maladjusted child who is clinging to its mother’s leg. I’ll tell you what she is doing to you. She is kicking you, and she is going to continue to kick you harder and harder until you hurt so badly that you stop clinging to her leg and let go of her. Your marriage is OVER. You need to understand that because you will not be able to move on with your life until you do.” Long term group members always told the new members, “Listen to Skylar, he knows what he’s talking about. It took me (x number of years) to figure all this out but I’m very glad that I followed Skylar’s advice.” Skylar told everybody, “The best thing you can do is create a new and better life for yourself. Nobody is going to do that for you. You can never go back. Unless you’re a masochist and you actually enjoy pain, you have no alternative but to go forward. Most of you are going sideways and unfortunately you’re not going to move on with your life until you reach the point where you wake up one morning and say to yourself ‘I can’t stand this pain. I simply cannot go on doing what I’ve been doing for one more day.’ That’s when you will begin to make the changes in your life that you’ve been afraid of making. But here’s the good news. Create a new and better life for yourself and someday you’ll discover that living well is the best revenge.”

There is a transcendent truth underlying Skylar’s concept that living well is the best revenge, but living well should not have revenge as its primary motive. Living well by enjoying each and every day to the fullest possible extent is one of the important things that life is all about, and that concept requires no justification. However, when your ex finds out that you are living better than you did before you were ejected, the knowledge will usually cause them great discomfort and if you have any residual feelings of anger, you will feel even happier about how well you are doing. Living better than you did before does not necessarily require a lot of money. One way to do it is to move to a nicer location than the one where you lived when you were married. It’s a good idea to move away from a place that contains too many bad memories. Consider moving to the place where your ex always wanted to live, or consider relocating to somewhere you always wanted to live. Treat yourself well. Eat well, Have fun. Make new friends. Enjoy life in every possible way. The information about how well you are living and how much fun you are having will filter back to your ex and you will know it. One last bit of Skylar’s advice is worth mentioning here. He used to tell people “Fake it ’til you make it.” That’s an expression used by Alcoholics Anonymous but it applies to this situation as well because even if things do not work out for you immediately, that’s information your ex does not need to have.

Skylar Moon died in 2004. There are countless people who will never forget this man, and they will also not forget how much they benefited from being in his divorce group. This author is one of those people. He is currently living happily ever after in paradise.

Planning retirement is best done many years before you actually retire. Preferably, fifteen to twenty years before retirement. With one of these, you’ll be able to catch up on all of those vacations you missed.

All in all, planning retirement may seem like a bit of a chore now, but you’ll thank yourself when you turn 70 years old and find yourself exactly where you want to be.

There has always been a need for retirement planning and today is certainly no different. There are 401(k)s and many other types of retirement plans that are available to you. You will need to take the time needed to evaluate what your current financial needs are and what you expect the future to hold.

Recent events, such as the rise in energy costs and the ever-skyrocketing health care costs need to be factored in. Although gas prices have been fluctuating lately, I think they are going to go back up, possibly even surpassing the extremes we saw all too recently. These types of events can take a toll on your retirement plan very quickly. Prudent planning begins early and you need a good source of information. Did you know that most retirement plans have a ceiling of 10% of your pre-tax wages that you can contribute? Lets say that today you need $40,000 to live on and you retire in 20 years, you will need a minimum of $850,000 to carry you through retirement. That is assuming that you will live an additional 20 years after you retire and are in good health. There is something to be said for debt reduction as being part of your retirement planning, as well, since the last thing you want to do is go into retirement with a ton of debt still hanging over your head.

Having $40,000 a year to live on with little to no debt will obviously go farther than if you still have the same debt load as you do now. If you reduce your debt load by the same amount that you save for retirement, you double your retirement savings.

One cannot have a conversation about retirement without the subject of taxes coming into it. The money you put into your 401(k) is pre-tax so you will pay taxes on it when you get disbursements. The 401(k) is intended for retirement, so there are also very heavy tax penalties if you withdraw any funds before you turn 59.5 years of age. If at all possible, do not make any early withdrawals from your retirement account, since most people have found that in addition to the heavy tax penalties for doing so, the prospect of paying it back, even with good intentions, is tougher than it seems.

As a result of The Secret, many people know who Bob Doyle is. His ability to clearly explain the Law of Attraction sets him apart. I recently had the opportunity to listen to Bob Doyle in an interview with Anthony Treas. What follows is what I learned from that interview.

Most of the people who are interested in the Law of Attraction are interested in attracting wealth into their lives. Bob points out that it is imperative to define what wealth means to you. Let’s review a few synonyms – abundance, affluence, fortune, prosperity, accomplishment, achievement. Do any of those apply to you? Bob Doyle’s definition is “Your true vision for your life” That’s it! Few of us have the exact same vision for our lives but what an unambiguous idea. This is not to be taken lightly… if you can gain clarity in your mind of what is your “true vision for your life” you will be miles ahead of others.

The Law of Attraction is the reason for everything that is occurring, has occurred, and will occur in our lives. If you’re living a life that is not what you’d like it to be it’s because of your thoughts. Do you really at a core level believe in yourself and your right to live the life of your dreams? If you’re not currently living that life the answer is no.

Have you ever met a person who is living the life of their dreams? It may have been a server in a restaurant, perhaps a tour guide, or an accountant – you will know immediately when you meet them because they radiate joy, they’re an absolute pleasure to be around. Do you see the answer here? They’re living their “true vision for their life”. They are in vibrational resonance with what they are attracting. What they are putting out is what they are getting in return. Why would anyone not choose to live their life like this?

In 1989 Marsha Sinetar wrote a book entitled “Do What You Love, the Money Will Follow – Discovering Your Right Livelihood” which I definitely recommend to you, can it possibly be that easy? ABSOLUTELY!!!

Once you are living your true vision for your life it’s like floating on a raft downstream. You will attract from the Universe all you need effortlessly. Your positive emotions are the key ingredient in this recipe for life. If you will listen to your heart and focus on how you are feeling emotionally you will be allowing the Law of Attraction to do its thing. If you find yourself in a situation where you’re experiencing anxiety, anger, or stress you are not supposed to be doing it – stop! Are there times when we need to do something we don’t want to do? Of course but that is not what I’m talking about here I’m asking you to focus on identifying your “true vison for your life” it may not come to you in an instant but I promise you if you make the effort, it will become apparent to you.

Many people are looking for ways to increase their retirement income. For most of these individuals, their homes are the greatest asset. A large section of the aging population has failed to plan effectively in order to have sufficient savings at retirement. They now are looking to their real estate to supplement their retirement income.

Real estate values are very unpredictable, especially now with the decrease in the real estate bubble. Prices are falling in some cities and flattening in others. It will take some planning to get the most from selling your real estate to supplement your retirement.

Be Realistic. To plan effectively, you must be realistic about the price you may get for your home. Real estate is an up and down market, so you should assume a traditional real estate market for valuating your home, with gains in value equal to the inflation rate. At retirement, you will have the same purchasing power you currently have. If gains in real estate values are better than the inflation rate, then you will have more. Just don’t count on it.

Get the Most from Your Real Estate. People used to work hard to pay off their mortgages for homes they planned to raise their children in and retire. Since 1989, the number of people 65 and older with mortgage debt has nearly tripled, adjusting for inflation. Making payments on real estate in retirement years will deplete your savings and retirement income faster than any other expenditure.

There are three reasons to pay off your real estate mortgage (1) decrease expenditures in your retirement years, (2) use the mortgage interest rate that you will save to increase your retirement savings, and (3) build more equity, in case you need it as income on which to live later. Paying off your mortgage is a good thing to do, regardless of what the real estate market is doing.

Downsize Your Home. If you are living in a home that is larger than what you need, do not hold on to it for sentimental reasons. Selling the larger home for a smaller one can: (1) give you a smaller mortgage payment than you currently have, or (2) purchase a smaller home outright with no mortgage. It also means less physical upkeep by you, as well as less maintenance and repair costs in the future during retirement. Please keep in mind that there will be selling, moving and new home renovation costs that must be deducted from the sale proceeds.

Sell the Extra Real Estate. If you have a second home or vacation real estate that will not be your retirement residence, you may wish to sell this extra real estate now, putting the sale proceeds into your retirement savings. You can put the mortgage and annual upkeep payments for this property into your retirement savings, too.

Reverse Mortgages. Though these products have been around for some time, we are hearing a lot about them lately. Such mortgages give you 50 percent or more of your home’s value with no mortgage payments, which are collected by the lender at your death or if you sell the real estate.

Beware! Reverse mortgages should be used only as a last-ditch effort at survival. The interest and fees added to your mortgage debt can be very costly. If you must consider a reverse mortgage, here are a few smart tips:

There are only a few reverse mortgage products now on the market, but others are coming soon. So, wait two or three years to garner more options and possibly better products.

You must be 62 to qualify for a reverse mortgage loan, but wait as long as possible to take such a loan. The younger you are, the smaller the loan and higher the cost over time.

Check out all of the products on the market and get independent financial counseling on the best one for you. They may look the same upfront, but the number of years and the loan value differ greatly between products, as well as the costs over time.

Do not buy into the hype! Mortgage brokers receive a large commission on these products. If you feel you are being pushed in this direction, check out other lenders.

Plan ahead. If you move and sell your real estate, the lender receives all that is due on the reverse mortgage from the sale proceeds. This could actually leave you in a worse financial state.

What is it about a great movie preview that makes us so excited to actually see the real thing? Is it that our favorite actor or actress is in the cast, maybe an unbelievable love story, or perhaps the content of the movie closely resonates with our hearts? Whatever the reasons may be, movie previews gets us excited. Sometimes the preview is so compelling, it sours our hope for the film we’re viewing if we’re at the theater. Without a doubt, movie previews are a call to action.

Consider your life as a preview of things to come. When you think of your future, does it get you excited? Does it keep you up at night daydreaming of the endless possibilities? When you think of your future, is it better or worse than things are now? And, if it’s better, is it just a little better or almost inconceivably better? Will the preview of your life inspire you to commit to living a life far beyond your current circumstances, which is well within your reach, or do you see hopelessness and misery?

One of the greatest underused human powers is the ability to create any kind of future we envision.

It doesn’t matter where you are in life; you are the architect of your own future. Yesterday is gone forever. There’s no bringing it back. Today is all you have. What you do with today will determine the life you live tomorrow. Dr. John Maxwell says it best, “A person can either pay now and play later or play now and pay later. Either way, you’re going to pay.”

What vision do you have for tomorrow? Is it sunny beaches and palm trees, or is it what I call voluntary slavery: working a job you hate because nothing better is available? Are you living your dream life, in your dream house, driving your dream car, supporting charities and organizations close to your heart? Are you in your dream job, doing the thing you were created to do? Did you go for it, or are you still playing it safe? Tomorrow isn’t here yet. You can make it any way you want it.

Do you want to live in a gated community outside Beverly Hills? Do you desire to escape winter by purchasing an island in the Caribbean? Does owning a million dollar yacht tickle your fancy? Dream big! The Bible even says without a vision, you will perish. Tomorrow can bring you everything you’ve ever dreamed possible, and more, but, it will require you to pay now so you can play later. Is having a dream life important enough for you to work hard for it? Does it mean enough for you to wisely save and invest money, develop a plan, and have the courage to believe the only way to fail is to quit? Your current level of success means nothing if you’re not totally happy and fulfilled. To live your dream life is worth everything you can give it. Living your life with purpose and meaning brings fulfillment.

Are you a person willing to not only dream of a great tomorrow, but also to do all you can to make it happen? Have you resolved to make the preview of your life so compelling it’s difficult to sleep at night? If so, let’s get started. These are the success secrets I currently use. It is best to do the following exercise in a quiet place where there will be no distractions.

Step One: DECIDE the kind of future you’re committed to having. Keep in mind that the sky is truly the limit. Remove the limiting thoughts that currently occupy valuable brain space.

Step Two: COMMIT to your decision by writing it down. If it’s not written down, it doesn’t exist.

Step Three: VISUALIZE yourself living your ultimate dream life. Visualizing comes easy for some and more difficult for others. This step is very important and not to be overlooked. Try as best you can to see yourself living your dream.

Step Four: WISE PLANNING can not only save time, but money, resources and headaches.

Step Five: ACT on your plan as if your life depended on it, because it does. Do not let a day go past that you don’t work on your dream. And if a day does go past, forgive yourself, and start fresh tomorrow. Action is 90% of success. Act. Get feedback. Readjust.

Step Six: VERBALIZE what your plans and goals are on a daily basis. Create ten to twenty word sentences that describe your dream life, commit it to memory, and verbalize that sentence over and over and over until you are overwhelmed with the feelings of purpose that are sure to follow.

Step Seven: Being PATIENT is the most difficult obstacle we face. We see a terrific future in our imagination, and we want it now. There’s nothing wrong with that; we all do it. However, we must be willing to work the plan, along with the readjustments, until our outward life reflects what we see in our imagination.

How is your preview looking now? If you follow these steps, I’m sure you will develop a totally can’t wait, gotta see it now preview of your future. It is my sincere hope that whatever the circumstances of your current life, you will apply the exercises I have given and change how you see your future. We all want more, but not many of us are willing to go after it. I have confidence that you will act, change your personal movie preview of your future, work your plan, and live your dream life.

It’s no secret that the average American is not saving enough for his or her retirement. The sad truth is that most Americans have no savings at all – the average family is $10,000 in net debt! For years, men and women could depend on company pensions for their retirement.

If that failed, there was always Social Security to bail them out. But with pensions going the way of the dinosaur and Social Security also on the path to extinction, retirement saving is more important than ever.

In fact, if you don’t begin saving for your retirement now, you may not have any retirement to look forward to at all – you could be working until the day you die, and that’s no way to spend your golden years. So now that you know you need to save and invest, what is your ultimate objective? How much will you need for retirement?

Retirement Tip – Open an Individual Retirement Account (IRA)

Individual Retirement Accounts allow you to save money for retirement, tax-deferred. There are two types of Individual Retirement Accounts – the traditional IRA and the Roth IRA – but the most important thing to understand is that an IRA is a type of account, not an investment product itself.

Often you’ll hear people talk about IRAs as if they are savings bonds, CDs, or mutual funds, but these are merely things that would go in an Individual Retirement Account – an IRA is a tax sheltered account specifically for retirement savings, more like your checking account than an investment product.

The best thing about IRAs is that they allow you to save for retirement without having to worry about Uncle Sam’s share. A traditional IRA lets you make tax deductible contributions of up to $4,000 per year to your account – this means if you fully fund your IRA, you will have a $4,000 write-off on your taxes!

The money you put into the account can be used to buy stocks, bonds, or almost any other type of investment. As your IRA grows in value, you never have to pay any taxes on capital gains – even if you sell stocks within the account for a profit!

However, when you begin withdrawing money from the IRA (you’re eligible to start at age 59 1/2), you are taxed on the full amount of your withdrawals at your regular income tax rate.

For most people, a Roth IRA is even better. It allows you to make after-tax contributions – meaning you won’t get that $4,000 tax write-off – and otherwise, works much like a traditional IRA. So how can a Roth be better? Because since you’re using after-tax money, Uncle Sam will never, ever be able to tax your account’s earnings.

This means that if you build up $20 million in your Roth IRA, you won’t owe the government one dime when you start withdrawing your loot!

So How Much Will You Need for a Comfortable Retirement?

Retirement experts say people turning 65 in 2006 will need approximately $1 million for retirement. This may seem like a lot, but with life expectancies rising every year, it’s understandable.

A liquid net worth of $1 million would allow you to buy government bonds that paid $50,000 a year in interest, and you’d get your principal back at the end of the bond’s term.

For your retirement, you will need to determine the inflation adjusted equivalent of $1 million. Figure inflation at 3 percent a year, and see how much you’ll need. Then determine how much you’ll need to save each year at 8-10 percent return on investment, in order to achieve that much.

Thanks to the power of compound interest, the sooner you start saving the better. So get started today if you want to have a leisurely retirement. You’ll thank yourself in your old age!

For most of the past decade, a number of editorial writers, politicians, members of the clergy, and other pundits have described America as a nation in some sort of crisis. They point to a growing number of people who drop out of high school, who are living on probation, parole, or in prison, who are victims of domestic or criminal assault, who are addicted to drugs or alcohol, who are infected with sexually transmitted disease, who are having abortions, who are giving birth outside of marriage, who are getting divorced, or who are relying on Ritalin, Xanax or Prozac to make it through the day. They maintain these statistics are evidence something has gone terribly wrong with the American way of life.

As a practicing clinical psychologist, I work with people included in these numbers every day of the week. Monday I talk with a man on his way to prison for writing bad checks, a middle-aged mother struggling to quit drinking herself into a stupor every night, and a twenty-something single woman recently diagnosed with herpes. Tuesday I talk with a teenager dealing with an unintended pregnancy, a father court-ordered out of his house after assaulting his son, and a wife conflicted about whether to end her extramarital affair. On Wednesday I meet with an 11-year-old boy who doesn’t cooperate with his teachers, on Thursday with a woman who was devastated by the news that her husband has filed for divorce so he can marry his girlfriend, and, on Friday, with an adolescent who recently attempted suicide.

From this perspective, rather than being numbers, persons included in statistics are living, breathing, human beings. Each has a unique history and set of circumstances as well as very personal thoughts, emotions, ideals, regrets, hopes, and dreams. But despite their differences, all of these individuals have one thing in common—they are all, to some degree, unhappy, discontent, and dissatisfied with life.

Recognizing that all of these people are in some sense unhappy, it is possible to characterize the number of persons in all of the statistical groups referred to by the pundits as a global measure of unhappiness in the United States. Since the total number of people in each of these groups continues to rise, it is reasonable to infer that we are in the midst of an epidemic of unhappiness. Recognizing that this nation was designed to optimize the conditions for the personal pursuit of happiness, this epidemic of unhappiness can be referred to as the current crisis in the American way of life.

Attempts to Cope with the Crisis

One group of opinion leaders offers a simple explanation for, and solution to, this crisis. Presuming illiteracy, probation, incarceration, assault, addiction, sexually transmitted illness, unintended pregnancy, domestic violence, and divorce are consequences of dysfunctional behavior, conservatives maintain that the rising number of people who find themselves with these conditions is the result of poor decision-making. They contend that people could avoid these outcomes by making better choices when managing their personal lives.

Conservatives remind us that the basic structure of the American way of life is a legal system based on a foundation of moral principles—ideas about right and wrong. They cite Founding Fathers, such as John Adams, who, in 1798, wrote, “Our constitution was made for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to govern any other.” Or they refer to James Madison, who, in 1778, wrote, “We have staked the whole future of American civilization, not upon the power of government, far from it. We have staked the future of all of our political institutions . . . upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God.”

Conservatives point to the fact that, beginning with Colonial America and up until roughly forty years ago, the people of this country generally assumed the moral principles the Founding Fathers inherited from the Judeo-Christian tradition were a set of guidelines for making choices which would lead to real and lasting happiness in this world and the next. They note that since those advocating a separation of church and state began to succeed in removing all reference to religion from public schools there has been an increase in the number of people who are failing to finish high school, living on probation, parole, or in prison, victims of domestic or criminal assault, addicted to drugs or alcohol, infected with sexually transmitted diseases, having abortions, giving birth outside of marriage, getting divorced, and relying on antidepressants and other psychotropic medications. They argue that each of these undesirable conditions could be lessened if Americans, once again, began to act on the Ten Commandments and the teachings of Jesus Christ when making choices in daily life.

On the other side, liberals insist there are several problems with the conservative approach. First, the moral position of the Judeo-Christian tradition is far from clear. Although all believers root their morality in scripture, there are wide differences in how sacred texts are understood. While some Christians maintain using alcohol is a sin, others serve wine in church. Similar differences exist with respect to the Christian positions on gambling, divorce and homosexuality. Liberals point to the fact that people of faith can be found on both sides of abortion, capital punishment, and assisted suicide to demonstrate that religiously based moral reasoning is incapable of effectively dealing with the major moral controversies of our time.

Further, liberals maintain that religiously-based moral reasoning permitted many of the most outrageous injustices of the past. Thousands were slaughtered in the Crusades, tortured during the Inquisition, and died during centuries of European holy war. Many who settled the British colonies in North America were fleeing persecution at the hands of religious authorities intolerant of their beliefs. After the American Revolution, the Bible was used to justify the perpetuation of slavery and the subordination of women. Even today the Ku Klux Klan uses a Christian symbol to terrorize non-white Americans who are simply exercising basic rights.

Liberals also note that the American Revolution was as much a rebellion against religion as it was a military campaign. Instead of relying on the British notion that it was a citizen’s duty to God to obey a divinely enthroned king, the Founding Fathers based their declaration of independence on rational philosophy—the other source of moral authority which has shaped and influenced the course of Western civilization since its beginning in ancient Greece. They went on to establish a government explicitly based on philosophical rather than on religious ideals. Referring to the first amendment of the Constitution and the fact that America has become a nation of many faiths, liberals argue that it is now un-American to base public education or any type of public policy on a set of moral principles which belong to any particular religious tradition.

Beyond rejecting the conservative solution to the crisis, liberals offer a different analysis of the crisis itself. Although acknowledging that failure to finish high school, delinquency, crime, addiction, sexually transmitted disease, unintended pregnancy, domestic violence, divorce, and emotional disorders involve some type of dysfunctional human behavior, they deny these conditions have anything to do with moral reasoning or ideas about right and wrong. Drawing on the theory of human nature generally accepted within contemporary social science, they contend that this behavior is determined by instinctive drives, patterns of prior conditioning, imbalances in brain chemistry, socioeconomic circumstances, or some other, as yet, unidentified factor which involves something other than choice. They believe further scientific research will inevitably discover the causes of this dysfunctional behavior and that the results of this research will eventually lead to a reduction in the number of persons who behave this way.

A Need for a New Approach

Rather than attempting to work together in an effort to find some common ground, today’s conservative and liberal leaders invest their energies in attempting to win hearts and minds to their respective points of view. Their strategies are to affect public policy through opinion polls and the election process. Unfortunately, as the leaders of these ideologies engage in cultural civil war, the epidemic of unhappiness continues and the current crisis in the American way of life endures.

One means of moving beyond this quagmire begins with the realization that crises are events which have a structure and dynamics of their own. Crises occur when people are confronted with undesirable conditions which are unintended and unanticipated. They result from pursuing courses of action based on assumptions which are in some way inaccurate, ineffective, or inappropriate with respect to achieving an intended outcome. Crises persist as long as those attempting to achieve the intended outcome continue doing what they do without realizing their assumptions are in some sense flawed.

Crises are resolved when three events occur. First, the assumptions of those who end up with the undesired outcome are clarified. Next, these assumptions are evaluated with respect to the degree that they are actually accurate, effective, and appropriate with respect to achieving the intended goal. Finally, the results of this evaluation are used to develop a new course of action aimed at achieving the intended outcome based on assumptions which are more accurate, effective, and appropriate for achieving the desired result.

This insight into the structure of a crisis suggests that a resolution to the current crisis in the American way of life could be obtained by identifying the assumptions within the conservative and liberal traditions, evaluating their accuracy, effectiveness, and appropriateness, and then developing a new approach to dealing with the epidemic of unhappiness based on what this evaluation has revealed.

Identifying Existing Assumptions

The conservative approach is rooted in three assumptions about human nature deeply rooted in Western civilization. These assumptions were contained in the writings of British Enlightenment philosophers—Francis Bacon, Thomas Hobbes, and John Locke—who provided a theory of human nature for those who led the American Revolution and went on to write the Constitution of the United States. Today’s conservatives often make reference to George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and other Founding Fathers who made use of these philosophers’ ideas.

The first conservative assumption is known as a volitional theory of human nature. It asserts that human beings have the capacity to choose between alternative potential courses of action. It also includes the notion that, when confronted with a choice, people are naturally motivated to select the potential course of action they believe is most likely to make them happy in some way.

The second conservative assumption is a moral theory referred to as enlightened self-interest. This theory presumes that moral principles are a set of guidelines for making choices which are essential to obtaining an optimal quality of life. It also presumes that if individuals act on these principles when making choices in daily living they are doing what they can to maximize their potential to achieve happiness, emotional well-being, contentment, and satisfaction with life.

Finally, conservatives assume that moral principles are a matter of religion. This assumption is based on the belief that individual human beings are limited in their ability to distinguish between those courses of action which only apparently enhance a person’s quality of life and those which enrich it in actuality. Accordingly, conservatives maintain that an all-knowing God revealed this knowledge about how to become and remain happy to specific persons—Moses, the Prophets, Jesus, and the Apostles—and that the rest of humanity can find real and lasting happiness by utilizing this information when making choices in daily life.

The liberal approach to dealing with illiteracy, probation, incarceration, assault, addiction, sexually transmitted disease, unintended pregnancy, domestic violence, divorce, and a variety of emotional disorders is based on a set of assumptions about human nature which began to influence the Western world as the philosophy of the Enlightenment was replaced by a new set of ideas about the nature of human existence. While Enlightenment thinking was rooted in faith in God, a vision of heaven, and a fear of hell, the notions about human nature utilized by liberals developed as an atheistic, scientific worldview emerged.

The first liberal assumption is referred to as determinism. This is the theory of human nature advanced by Sigmund Freud, William James, and John Watson, seminal thinkers who set the foundations for contemporary social science. Determinism consists of the belief that human behavior is caused by instinctive drives, patterns of prior conditioning, genetics, changes in brain chemistry, socioeconomic status or some other process which has nothing to do with choosing between alternative potential courses of action.

Second, liberals assume that moral principles are irrelevant to dealing with dysfunctional behavior. This assumption is based on the belief that rather than religion, the great minds of Western philosophy are the proper source of moral authority and the belief that the French philosopher Auguste Comte, is the great mind Americans should turn to as the appropriate authority on morality. His theory, altruism, maintains that what’s right is that which enhances the welfare of other people, society, or humanity in general. Since altruism insists that moral activity consists of service to others, acting on principle is viewed by altruists as an obstacle to, or restriction on, the personal pursuit of happiness.

Third, liberals assume that religion is not a reliable source of knowledge about life or how to live. This assumption is rooted in their opinion that the quality of human life has improved in virtually every domain of human existence where scientific discoveries have replaced pre-scientific thought. Liberals maintain that it makes more sense to rely on science as a means of trying to figure out how to help people who engage in dysfunctional behavior than referring to religious texts which they view as outdated relics from a bygone era.

Evaluating Assumptions

Clearly, the traditional approaches to dealing with the current crisis in the American way of life involve a set of questionable assumptions about whether people are capable of making choices, as well as the purpose and source of ideas about right and wrong. While conservatives assume that people have the capacity to choose between alternative potential courses of action, that religion is the proper source of ideas about right and wrong, and that acting on moral principle is essential to becoming and remaining happy, liberals assume that human behavior has nothing to do with choice, that morality is irrelevant to the personal pursuit of happiness, and that science, rather than religion, is the appropriate source of knowledge for dealing with the dysfunctional behavior contributing to the epidemic of unhappiness. Now that these questionable assumptions have been identified, each can be evaluated in terms of the degree to which available evidence suggests it is accurate, effective, and appropriate with respect to attempting to resolve the current crisis in the American way of life.

Throughout the course of Western civilization and up until the establishment of social science, roughly one hundred years ago, all educated and thoughtful intellectual leaders recognized that people have the capacity of choice. Since the first philosophers of ancient Greece, every major philosopher in the Western tradition has maintained that, with respect to many behaviors, human beings are able to select between alternative potential courses of action. In addition, every known society has had a legal system based on the notion human beings actually make choices in the course of daily living.

These historical and sociological facts are consistent with observations human beings have made with respect to themselves and one another since the dawn of time. In everyday descriptions of human behavior, people have always regularly made reference to intentions, desires and choices when describing the activities of friends, family members and those whom they deal with in commercial and community affairs. Moreover, we have direct access to the process of choosing between alternative potential courses of action when we decide what to eat for breakfast, what color coat to purchase, and which program to watch on television.

Although the results of some animal studies can be used to argue for a deterministic theory of human nature, there is no conclusive evidence to suggest that this is an accurate means of describing many types of human behavior. Over the course of the Twentieth Century, scientists have attempted to identify a number of non-volitional processes such as instinctive drives, patterns of prior conditioning, genetics, changes in brain chemistry, and socioeconomic status which cause people to fail to acquire adequate vocational skills, commit crimes, become addicted to drugs or alcohol, engage in risky sexual behavior, abuse family members or get divorced. At best, these studies have produced only modest correlations. The results of thousands of these studies over nearly one hundred years reveal that although non-volitional processes may play some role in these dysfunctional behaviors, they do not actually cause people to behave in any of these ways. Based on all of this scientific evidence, it is reasonable to conclude that scientists have never been able to prove that human beings lack the capacity of choice.

One way of determining whether moral principles are relevant to the personal pursuit of happiness consists of looking at what research has revealed about the relationship between acting on principle and subsequent quality of human life. Statistics show that there is a correlation between personal reports of happiness, emotional well-being, contentment, and satisfaction in living with people who regularly tell the truth, keep their agreements, and refrain from theft. Research also reveals that there is a correlation between people who report they are unhappy, discontent, and dissatisfied with life and a tendency to frequently lie, cheat, and steal. What’s more, virtually all psychological research on the reasons people describe for acting on principle reveals that the vast majority of individuals who do what’s right act on principle because they believe they will personally benefit as a result.

Assuming that people have the capacity to choose between alternative potential courses of action and that moral principles can enhance a person’s potential for becoming and remaining happy, the next assumption which needs to be evaluated is whether it is more appropriate to assume that religion is the proper source of moral principles or whether to turn to philosophy for ideas about what’s right and wrong. In this respect, both conservatives and liberals assume there are only two sources of moral principles. Neither considers the fact that within the past decade a new source of moral principles has emerged. This source is science and what the scientific method has revealed about the relationship between choices people make and how those choices affect the quality of their lives. Given the fact that these principles were specifically formulated as a means of determining which potential courses of action maximize a person’s likelihood of becoming and remaining happy, scientifically formulated principles of morality provide a more effective means of dealing with the epidemic of unhappiness than continuing to operate on the assumptions about the source of moral knowledge contained in either the conservative or liberal approach.

Scientifically Formulated Principles of Morality

Scientifically formulated principles of morality were developed by following the same logic scientists used to come up with principles for achieving health and physical well-being. Researchers were able to formulate wellness principles by observing a correlation between certain types of voluntary human behavior and a number of serious illnesses. Studies revealed that people who regularly smoke tobacco often end up with cancer, emphysema, or heart disease. It also detected that a lack of exercise is correlated with diabetes, obesity, and stroke. Based on these and other correlations, scientists were able to formulate alternatives to unhealthy patterns of behavior which they then promoted as guidelines for making healthy choices in daily life. These principles for healthy living indicate that when we avoid tobacco, street drugs, and the excessive use of alcohol, obtain adequate amounts of rest and exercise, and eat a high fiber, low-fat diet, we are doing what we can to maximize our potential for becoming and remaining healthy.

Similarly, the search for scientifically formulated principles of morality began by determining which types of voluntary human behavior correlate with a loss of happiness, emotional well-being, contentment, and satisfaction with life. Once these correlations were determined, alternatives to these behaviors were identified. Conceptualized as principles, these guidelines for making choices in daily living maximize a person’s potential for becoming and remaining happy.

Research which led to the development of scientifically formulated principles of morality revealed that there are basic similarities between the voluntary behaviors of the majority of people who become, in one way or another, unhappy as a result of doing what they did. These patterns of behavior are referred to as self-defeating because they undermine a person’s effort at becoming and remaining happy. Research revealed that there are the following seven types of self-defeating behavior which lead to a loss of happiness, contentment, and satisfaction with life.

Heedless behavior consists of pursuing a course of action while knowing it poses a threat to something or someone essential to a person’s overall contentment and satisfaction with life. Examples include smoking cigarettes, using illicit drugs, driving while under the influence of consciousness altering substances and engaging in unsafe sex. Self-effacing behavior consists of regularly pursuing courses of action aimed at enhancing the happiness of others while failing to attend to what is essential to one’s own. Examples include a female adolescent who consents to unprotected sexual relations as a means of pleasing her boyfriend, a husband who constantly defers to his wife’s wishes on decisions which negatively affect his own quality of life, and parents who continue to provide for able-bodied adult children while neglecting what they need to do to prepare for retirement. Non-productive behavior involves spending time and energy on activities which have little or nothing to do with acquiring or maintaining what is required for contentment and satisfaction with life. Examples include teenagers who spend their time watching television, listening to music or talking on the phone rather than doing homework or studying for exams, employees who spend portions of their workday surfing the Internet rather than completing assigned tasks, and spouses who spend virtually all of their time in activities which have nothing to do with nurturing their partners in life. Unfaithful behavior consists of failing to fulfill agreements freely entered into at an earlier point in time. Examples include adolescents breaking curfews, salespersons who fail to honor warranties and married people who cheat on their spouses. Disrespectful behavior consists of pursuing a course of action which violates another person’s basic rights. Examples include physical or sexual assault, theft, or the disclosure of certain types of personal information. Deceptive behavior consists of attempting to create in another person’s mind an image of reality which does not correspond with actuality. It includes creating misleading audio or video recordings, filing falsified reports, or simply telling lies. Ill-considered interpersonal interaction occurs when people pursue a course of action which involves other persons whose behavior is heedless, nonproductive, disrespectful, unfaithful and/or deceptive. Examples include riding in an automobile with an impaired driver, continuing to employ an individual who does not put in a day’s work for a day’s pay, disclosing personal information to an individual who has demonstrated no respect for privacy, remaining in a marriage with a spouse who has an ongoing series of extramarital affairs, and trusting a person who frequently lies.

Once it was determined that these seven patterns of behavior are the ones which correlate with unhappiness, discontent and/or dissatisfaction in life, a set of alternatives was identified. The alternative to heedless and self-effacing behavior as well as ill-considered interpersonal interaction is referred to as self-respect. Self-respect consists of avoiding any course of action which clearly poses a threat to what is required for contentment and satisfaction with life. Industry is the alternative to non-productive behavior. Industry consists of investing the time and energy required to obtain and maintain what is essential for contentment and satisfaction with life. The alternative to unfaithful and disrespectful behavior is referred to as equity. Equity consists of honoring agreements and respecting the basic rights of others. Honesty, the alternative to deceptive behavior, consists of rendering an accurate description of reality. Like wellness principles, these guidelines for making choices only maximize the potential for achieving emotional well-being when they are combined and acted on consistently in the course of daily living. Given this reality, the combination and regular use of the four scientifically formulated principles of morality can be referred to as the formula for happiness.

Prevention and Dissemination

The potential that the formula for happiness has for reducing the epidemic of unhappiness becomes evident when the connection between acting on its principles and a person’s ability to avoid functional illiteracy, probation, incarceration, assault, addiction, sexually transmitted illness, unintended pregnancy, or divorce is clarified.

People who act on the principles of self-respect and industry can acquire adequate skills for competitive employment in today’s post-industrial economy. When those who are inclined to violate the rights of others act on the principle of equity, they avoid probation and incarceration which is frequently a consequence of murder, assault, and various types of theft. When those who are mulling over an opportunity to experiment with illicit drugs act on the principle of self-respect, they avoid future addiction. When people who have become addicted to drugs or alcohol act on the principles of self-respect, industry, and honesty, they enter into substance abuse recovery programs and invest the blood, sweat, and tears required to overcome their dependency. When interested in having casual and unprotected sexual intercourse, people who act on the principle of self-respect avoid sexually transmitted disease and unintended pregnancy. When people act on the principle of self-respect in choosing a spouse, industry for investing time and energy in working on a satisfying marriage, and equity in forsaking all others, there is a reduction in the number of people who live with marital disharmony, domestic violence, and divorce.

Scientifically formulated principles of morality only hold the promise of reducing the epidemic of unhappiness if people become aware of these ideas about what’s right and act on these principles as they go about their daily lives. This means that a reverse in the epidemic of unhappiness requires a general recognition of the value of acting on these principles to the individual and to society at large. Clearly, the most efficient and effective means of achieving this goal is through the process of education.

The first step in teaching a significant number of youth about scientifically formulated principles of morality began with The Facts of Life Seminar which was instituted in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania in 1993. This program for character development was designed to teach the formula for happiness to teens who are on juvenile probation and to show them how to apply the formula in the course of daily living. All of the adolescents adjudicated delinquent in this county are currently required to complete The Facts of Life Seminar as a one of the conditions of their probation.

In The Facts of Life Seminars students learn that when they act on scientifically formulated principles of morality they get the tangible benefit of improving and maintaining the quality of their lives. Students are provided with mnemonic devices similar to those used in teaching principles of nutrition and health. They are equipped with decision trees and given several exercises to help them learn to recognize a context for principled decision-making and how to systematically employ scientifically formulated principles of morality to figure out which alternatives to pursue. In addition to learning about the principles themselves, students are trained in behavioral techniques such as imaging and self-talk as a means of enhancing self-control when confronted with temptation to engage in a self-defeating course of action.

Since its inception, hundreds of adolescents have gone through Facts of Life Seminars taught by juvenile probation officers, mental health treatment personnel, and a number of teachers in residential placement centers, day treatment programs, outpatient counseling centers, and alternative education schools. Outcome research reveals that of those who complete this program there is a 123% increase in the number likely to refrain from violence, a 92% increase in the number likely to refrain from theft, a 178% increase in the number likely to keep their promises, and a 160% increase in the number likely to tell the truth. In 2006, the Pennsylvania Center for Juvenile Justice Training and Research sponsored the first state-wide program to prepare youth workers to lead Facts of Life Seminars throughout the Commonwealth.

In addition, a number of public school administrators and guidance counselors who learned about The Facts of Life Seminar have expressed an interest in integrating the formula for happiness into classes on decision-making and self-awareness in public schools. They recognize that many of the youth on juvenile probation may have been able to avoid trouble with the law if they learned to use scientifically formulated principles of morality as part of their overall education. As a result of this interest Lessons on The Facts of Life have been developed. This is a set of lesson plans which can be integrated into existing curriculum on decision-making and self-awareness classes in both public and private schools.

When scientifically formulated principles of morality are taught within a public school, influential persons in the community need to be aware of their existence as well as their value in promoting personal responsibility and citizenship. Public meetings provide opportunities for parents and other community leaders to learn about the origin and nature of the formula for happiness as well as why and how it is effective in motivating adolescents to act on principle in daily life. These meetings also equip members of the community with a vocabulary and a set of concepts about right and wrong which they can share with other adults who are dealing with the challenge of character development in youth. This ability to speak a common language enables teacher, school administrators, parents, clergy, and other community leaders to coordinate their efforts in dealing with issues of responsibility and accountability at school, at home, and in the neighborhood. Clearly, this effort can only succeed if those involved in implementing programs for character education based on the formula for happiness are able to enlist support from community leaders who represent both conservative and liberal groups.

Conservative Support

Because scientifically formulated principles of morality are based on a volitional theory of human nature and because they are clearly relevant to the personal pursuit of happiness, many conservatives who learn about the formula for happiness recognize its value with respect to reducing the epidemic of unhappiness in the United States. But, since most conservatives believe that morality must be a matter of religion, some have difficulty supporting the idea that scientifically formulated principles of morality should be taught in public schools. They are frequently used to taking a position that it would be more appropriate to either return biblically-based moral principles to the classroom or to take all instruction in moral reasoning and action out of the schools, leaving this aspect of education to parents and to the clergy.

The conservative position that biblically-based morality should be brought back into public schools is rooted in the history of the United States. Conservatives remind us that when the Founding Fathers framed the Constitution they recognized democracy was a very fragile form of government. They knew it had only been tried twice before in the history of Western civilization and that each time it had collapsed into some form of dictatorship. In order to prevent this from happening in America, some of the Founding Fathers advocated for a system of public education so that citizens who are electing public officials would be able to make good choices when it came time to cast their votes. Benjamin Rush, one of the Founding Fathers, and the father of American psychiatry, was a chief architect of public schools in America. He maintained public schools should have two objectives. The first was to teach basic academic skills—reading, writing, and arithmetic. The second was to train students to act on the moral principles contained in the Ten Commandments and the teachings of Jesus.

Based on this mission, for nearly 200 years, public schools in America were one of three institutions which trained successive generations of Americans in moral reasoning and its relevance to daily life. Public school’s functioned in concert with the church and family in presenting an integrated and effective means of acting on principle at home, at school, at work, and in the larger community. History reveals that this combined effort at character development began to unravel when advocates for the separation of church and state were successful in requiring public schools to remove any reference to The Ten Commandments and the teachings of Jesus. Since most Americans view morality as a matter of religion, public schools rapidly and completely abandoned all formal teaching of moral reasoning based on a concern the school district would become the object of litigation by the American Civil Liberties Union.

Conservatives who cite this history as a means of arguing for a return of biblically-based moral instruction to the classroom can be reminded that given the political strength of those who advocate the separation of church and state, it is unlikely religion will be returned to public school classrooms in the United States anytime in the foreseeable future. What’s more, even if this were to occur, teaching moral reasoning based on scripture will do little to motivate a large number of students to act on principle because many Americans no longer understand the world in terms of Biblical descriptions of reality. Students who have no faith in God, who have no vision of heaven, and who have no fear of hell, have no reason to take seriously what the Bible has to say about life and how to live. Clearly, scientifically formulated principles of morality are much more powerful in motivating public school students who have no religious foundation to make use of them in daily living because these ideas about how to behave are consistent with the scientific worldview which pervades everything else they learn at school.

Those conservatives who maintain moral training should be kept out of public school and left up to the family and the clergy can be reminded that in America today millions of children have never seen the inside of a synagogue or a church. Millions more are being raised by parents who see no value in acting on moral principles in the course of daily living. Since public schools are the only place these children would have an opportunity to receive formal training on how to act on principle, failing to provide this type of education only perpetuates the epidemic of unhappiness in the United States. Persons of faith who have no problems using scientific discoveries which have led to vaccinating virtually all children in America against smallpox, diphtheria, and polio should be encouraged to recognize that teaching the formula for happiness is a means of inoculating children against functional illiteracy, probation, incarceration, addiction, sexually transmitted diseases, unintended pregnancy, marital disharmony, domestic violence, divorce, and a variety of problems with their mental health. It makes no more sense to deprive millions of children of the benefit of learning about scientifically formulated principles of morality than it would to limit the availability of vaccinations to the children of persons who believe in God and who take their kids to Sunday School.

Those conservatives who believe that acting on a secular set of moral principles may have a negative effect on fostering faith can be reminded that scientifically formulated principles of morality are in no way hostile to a belief in God or any traditional religion. While letting students learn about the formula for happiness at school, parents and religious leaders can combine this product of scientific research with their approach to religious education. Religious educators can show children how scientifically formulated principles of morality are compatible with many of the ideas about right and wrong contained in scripture as a means of providing further validation for the moral principles found in sacred texts. What’s more, religious teachers can demonstrate how combining Biblical instructions on how to relate to God with scientifically formulated principles of morality enables persons of faith to experience a greater degree of joy than the level of fulfillment people are able to find by simply following the formula for happiness

Liberals

Because the formula for happiness is a product of the scientific method, many liberals find the notion that it can be taught in public school to be an intriguing idea. Since they can also see how training youth to act on scientifically formulated principles of morality will go a long way toward reducing the epidemic of unhappiness, they generally recognize the value of encouraging this approach to teaching decision-making in public schools. At the same time, some liberals have difficulty supporting a program for character development which inspires students to act on principle by an explicit appeal to self-interest. This resistance can subside once these liberals recognize how following the formula for happiness results in a number of benefits to others and to society as a whole.

When an individual acts on the principle of self-respect that person is doing what he or she can to promote his or her overall physical and emotional well-being, thereby relieving healthcare and social service agencies of the need to provide for that individual and making their services available to other needy members of the community. When people acts on the principle of industry, they provide for the material needs of other people in the form of such tangible items as food, clothing, shelter, automobiles, appliance, electronic devices, and countless other meaningful material objects which enhance the quality of human life. When a doctor, nurse, attorney, banker, police officer, auto mechanic, building inspector, or custodian acts on the principle of industry, he or she is serving others by providing quality healthcare, legal representation, financial assistance, security, transportation, or safe and clean buildings, streets and parks, which enhance the lives of other members of the community. When a person acts on the principle of equity, he or she is enabling others to maintain their physical and emotional well-being while, at the same time, contributing to the freedom and security of other members of the community. When a person acts on the principle of honesty, he or she is providing others with accurate information which enables them to make informed and realistic decisions choices when faced with momentous decisions which will have a long-term impact on their future quality of life.

Beyond these benefits which result from acting on specific scientifically formulated principles of morality, persons who behave according to the formula for happiness tend to be those who support institutions which are central to the American way of life. Self-respecting, industrious, equitable, and honest people are those individuals who provide most of the contributions to charitable organizations in the United States. As taxpayers, they also provide service to others through government-funded health and welfare programs.

Self-respecting, industrious, equitable, and honest individuals build better families, neighborhoods, and communities. Working within these networks of interpersonal relationships they develop, support, and maintain quality education, healthcare institutions, libraries, and emergency services. They become politically informed and conscientious voters who support politicians and public policies which balance agricultural, mining and manufacturing interests with environmental concerns. They also support candidates and government officials who are ensuring fair law enforcement, protecting the integrity of the courts, and maintaining military readiness so that all citizens can benefit from a government designed to protect each individual’s right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Assuming liberals are interested in a program for character development which can provide these benefits to society, it is important for them to recognize that these benefits only materialize when individuals are motivated to act on those principles which yield these results. Since character education based on the formula for happiness demonstrates that it is in the students’ interest to act on principle, this approach to character education is effective in inspiring them to make use of scientifically formulated principles of morality in the course of daily living. As such, teaching the formula for happiness is a much more reliable means of enhancing the welfare of others than simply requiring students in character development programs to engage in public service activities such as serving meals in a soup kitchen, picking up litter along the highway, or baking cookies for the residents of the local homeless shelter.

Resetting the Moral Foundation

In 1776, a group of British subjects declared their independence from royal rule and went on to design a blueprint for a way of life intended to optimize the conditions for the personal pursuit of happiness. Recognizing that the pursuit of happiness depends on individual self-control, they based the Constitution and the Bill of Rights on the assumption that Americans would continue to govern their personal lives with the moral principles they inherited from Judeo-Christian tradition. Although the Founding Fathers were aware that science was making impressive advances even in their day, they had no way of envisioning how that moral foundation would disintegrate when the Christian vision of reality gave way to the scientific worldview which characterizes America today.

“These are the times that try men’s souls” wrote Thomas Paine at the beginning of The American Crisis. Five months after the Continental Congress issued the Declaration of Independence, he wrote this essay to awaken Americans to the fact that the war for winning that independence was not yielding the intended, desired, and anticipated result. He urged the people of this nation to recognize that if they simply went about their daily lives assuming the war would be won without some effort on their part, they were pursuing a course of action which would have disastrous consequences with respect to the future of the American way of life. We now know that those who reevaluated this assumption and devoted themselves to the cause, were eventually successful in establishing the first nation on earth devoted to protecting each citizen’s right to the pursuit of happiness.

Like the Americans of his day, we are currently confronted with a crisis and with a soul-searching choice. One alternative involves continuing to flounder along, arguing about whether choices make a difference in the quality of human life, bickering over whether morality plays a part in the personal pursuit of happiness, and quarreling about whether morality must be a matter of religion or whether it should be based on some philosophy, while each year more and more children move into adult life with virtually no appreciation for the role morality plays in the pursuit of happiness. The other alternative consists of recognizing that the choices we make determine the quality of our lives, acknowledging that ideas about right and wrong are essential to the pursuit of happiness, and doing what we can to promote the notion that scientifically formulated principles of morality are an effective means of restoring moral reasoning and moral action to its proper place at the foundation of the American way of life.

Insurance is all about managing risks, any insurance companies will not take any risks when rates are set, which are paid by you as premium. They would take precautions to make sure that you won’t die prematurely; it may cause them to pay out more than the amount paid by you. The risk here referred is the pretty much the same health risks such as, tobacco use, cholesterol, diabetes, over weight or fat, and many other conditions related to poor health and early death. To account for these risks, insurance company would designate your status based on age, gender and health, and that would further determine how much you pay for a given amount of insurance.

The insurance company would ask you about your medical history and may want you to take some sort of physical exam as well. While filling up the health questionnaire you need to be faithful, in case you lie the company will find out and your policy would be canceled. And if in case your sick and were to die and then the company found out you lied earlier, for instance, you said you were a non-smoker but ended up dying of lung cancer from a smoking habit, they could deny the death benefits.

Some of the risk factors cannot be controlled, such as age and gender. “Women live longer than men”, so normally women have the benefit of lower rates on insurance. And as men tend to have shorter life spans, they have the benefit of paying lower rate on annuity. Same your age also have an affect on premium. Younger people, who have much longer to pay premiums before they die, pays a lower rate compared to the older people. Your life style, your family medical history and your mental, physical condition as well matters while calculating premiums.

Most of the insurance company will ask you to undergo a physical exam, a medical doctor would check your weight, blood pressure and other vital signs, and may take a blood and urine sample. Some cases may also require extensive tests such as X-ray or EKG. Your blood and urine samples would be tested for sign of disease such as HIV virus, cholesterol level, diabetes, kidney problem, hepatitis and any other problem as well. The samples would be then screened for the findings of nicotine and some medications as well as for illegal drugs.

Some insurance companies would even improve an individual’s rating, and adjust the premium, for risk factors, which reduces over time. For example someone who purchased life insurance shortly after about with his cancer, that person would possibly be paying high-risk rates because of his health history. But, because the risk of the cancer returning reduces over the years, that individual may contact the insurer after being cancer-free for five years and may get a lower rate.

This was my first editing attempt using Apple’s iMovie. I rode in the back seat of a T-6 with the canopy removed and my brother was in the fire truck. It was quite a thrill. The inside B-29 shots are from a flight I took in June of 1997. Note the Boeing 307 parked on the ramp as the B-29 taxis in. That was shot two weeks before that same Boeing 307 took a swim in Puget Sound. The 307 is on display now at the Smithsonian and the B-29 flies from Midland, TX. Take a look at their site:

Hawaii volcanoes are known as “shield” volcanoes, gently sloping mountains produced from a lot of very wet, fast-moving lava flows. Each Hawaiian island is made up of at least one primary volcano.

When you move along the island chain from the south, where volcanoes are active, to the northwest part of the chain, the volcanoes become older–and less active. The active volcanoes erupt a type of rock known as basalt. When in a “molten” state, basalt produces the fluid lava that you see running down mountains and valleys.

The Big Island of Hawaii is home to five major volcanoes: Kilauea, Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, Hualalai and Kohala. Mauna Loa is considered the largest active volcano on earth, even though it has not erupted since 1984. But Kilauea, home of the Hawaii Vocanoes National Park, is the most active volcano in terms of how much lava it erupts each year, and the place most visitors come to see volcanic action.

Ancient Hawaiians believed that Kilauea was the physical manifestation of the fury of the mountain goddess, Pele. Kilauea has added 550 acres of coastal land since eruptions began in 1983. (To visualize how large this is, imagine that this is enough to fill more than 200 million
dump trucks!). Hot rivers of molten orange lava, flowing downhill can be seen most any evening of the year.

Hawaii Vocanoes National Park, two hour’s drive from Kona and five hours from Kohala on the Big Island, can be the highlight of any vacation. Open year round, one can explore the many aspects of Kilauea volcano. Much of the best hiking on the Big Island is found within this park. And a visit to the park will give you an up-close view of a volcano.

The Park, open 24 hours a day, is sometimes referred to as the “drive-in” volcano since it can be easily viewed by car. Even if you don’t experience lava flows when you visit, there is much to see. Lava craters, giant chasms, vents spewing steam, lava tubes (or caves) and Hawaiian
petroglyphs can all be experienced here. The Visitor’s Center at the Kilauea Caldera is located at 4,000 feet. Here you can find books, videos and other information about the park.

Crater Rim Drive, which circles the volcano, has many interesting viewpoints and jumping off points for short hikes. Also within the park is the Jagger Museum and the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. Be sure to bing your camera, water, food and extra clothes, especially if you are staying in the area after sunset.

One can easily spend a day or two exploring Kilauea, so give yourself enough time to really experience the rare phenomenon of a live volcano.

In addition to Kilauea volcano, two other volcanic mountains on the Big Island, Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea are prominent. They stand more than 13,500 feet high and have frequent snowstorms during the winter. Mauna Kea even has year-round snow fields near its pinnacle. Imagine being able to ski in Hawaii!

If your time on the Big Island is short and you would like to take a look at Kilauea volcano, consider a helicopter tour. Since you can’t really “see” the mountain from anywhere else on the island, a helicopter tour is a good way to view the volcanic activity. Helicopter tour operators can be found in Hilo and the Kohala resort areas.

When planning your Hawaii adventure, be sure include some time at the amazing Kilauea Volcano, for an “other worldly” view of life on our planet.

The quickest way to get automobile rate quotes from different companies is to go to an insurance comparison website. Once there you’ll spend a few minutes filling out a simple questionnaire to get multiple quotes.

Some of the better insurance comparison websites have a chat feature where you can get answers to your questions online from an insurance expert, and an “Articles” section where you can get tips and advice. (See link below.)

If you’re currently insured, make sure you have your insurance policy handy so you can compare apples to apples.

Every company will have some complaints filed against them. You want to find out if a particular company has an unusually large number of complaints filed against them compared to other companies.

Once you take the above steps you’ll know you have a cheap automobile insurance rate with a good company.

Retirement is a fact of life for the majority of people. It may be a long way off for you – or it might be right around the corner. No matter what point you are at in relationship to your retirement date, it is always wise to take steps towards saving for the event. However, saving for retirement may not be as beneficial as it once was. The increase in cost of living and the instability of social security means that merely saving may not be enough – you now have to invest for your retirement.

The first place to start is by taking a look at the retirement plan offered by your company, if any. Once upon a time, these plans were quite sound. However, companies themselves can get into financial difficulty, Enron is a recent example, which results in employees not having the retirement provision they thought was there.

If you elect not to invest in your company’s retirement plan, then there are other options.

First, you can invest in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, certificates of deposit, and money market accounts. You do not have to state to anybody that the returns on these investments are to be used for retirement. You can simply let your money grow overtime, and when certain investments reach their maturity, reinvest them and continue to let your money grow.

You can also open an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). IRA’s are quite popular, and the money is not taxed until you withdraw the funds. You may also be able to deduct your IRA contributions from the taxes that you owe. An IRA can be opened at most banks. A ROTH IRA is a newer type of retirement account. With a Roth, you pay taxes on the money that you are investing in your account, but when you cash out, no federal taxes are owed. Roth IRA’s can also be opened at a financial institution.

Another popular type of retirement account is the 401(k). 401(k’s) are typically offered through employers, but you may be able to open a 401(k) on your own. You should speak with a financial planner or accountant to help you with this.

For the self-employed, the Keogh plan may be appropriate. This is another type of IRA, and it is suitable for self employed people. Self-employed small business owners may also be interested in Simplified Employee Pension Plans (SEP). This is another type of Keogh plan that some find is easier to administer than a regular Keogh plan.

Whichever retirement investment you choose, the key is to make sure you choose one now! Again, do not solely depend on social security. And also, be wary of totally relying on a company retirement plan that may or may not come through! The best way to take care of your financial future is by investing in it today.

I am miffed. I am sitting in my casita (little house) in Guanajuato moaning and groaning about something over which I have no possible control. I feel like swooning to the bed and uttering vile curses, but, as my wife often reminds me, “What good would that do?”

I have written about this aspect of Mexican life before in my books and columns-that which is stinging like a bee in my bonnet right now. I am sitting in front of a computer right now whose internet DSL connection is deader than a doorknob. I am sitting in a casita with not one drop of drinking water left to soothe my burning thirst. Dead Internet and not a drop of water is what are tormenting me right now as I hack out these words. “But things happen” you say and you are right. Things happen. The only problem is that when they happen in Mexico they happen here like nowhere else upon the earth (except possibly in the rest of Latin America, Spain, and Italy)!

As I have lamented before, life in Mexico as an American expat is smooth sailing until something bad happens. Until something comes up that requires even a small level of cooperation and a modicum of efficiency, life here is pretty good. The climate is great, the food is fantastic, cost-of-living is low, and we are treated fairly well by our Mexican neighbors. Truly the stereotypical hospitality of Mexicans toward foreigners is well deserved and easy to encounter even as tourist. All goes well until something doesn’t.

Something is bad now.

Inexplicably, when the guys who deliver the bottled drinking water get it into their heads to stop coming around your street, you are at the mercy of God Himself for your water needs. Without committing a cultural insult and actually confronting them, you simply have no explanation for why they will suddenly decide it is your time to die from dehydration.

The way this works is that the companies who bottle the drinking water send their guys in bottled-water laden trucks to cruise the streets yelling a plaintiff cry, “Agua…Agua!” You have to run to the nearest window and scream this back at them. They follow the sound of your screeching until they make eye contact. They ask how many bottles you need and then haul your water into your house.

This process falls apart sometimes. For reasons I cannot begin to understand, they will suddenly stop coming to your house. They will offer you no explanation for trying to kill you by dehydration nor will any of your dying neighbors know why either. You can call the company’s phone number and they will promise vehemently to come running to your aid with life-sustaining water. However, once again a “TMO” (Typical Mexican Operation) takes place when you finally reach someone to order water:

“They will swear upon The Virgin of Guadalupe (the patron saint of Mexico) that water is on its way and, of course, this means that it will never show up. Water will never come.”

Currently, we are at 10 phone calls and counting. Our record so far has been calling for 7 days before they showed up with some water.

The internet, when it crashed, took us 25 phone calls before getting someone who could tell us they tested the line and that the trouble was on “their end.” The person gave the usual vain promise to get it fixed…I am not holding my breath! I will have to go to an Internet caf

It’s hard to call Lee Iacocca a failure. In fact, it’s nearly impossible.

The man who led Chrysler back from the brink of failure, and later helped raise millions of dollars to revitalize the Statue of Liberty, admitted years ago he had failed at something: retirement.

In a Fortune article in 1996, Iacocca shocked the nation by saying, “You plan everything in life, and then the roof caves in on you because you haven’t done enough thinking about who you are and what you should do with the rest of your life.”

If this sounds familiar, you aren’t alone. Most Americans are avoiding the talk of life after retirement, and even more are putting off the financial aspects of retirement planning. Even of those who realize having a plan is essential, many don’t bother to decide what they’ll devote their precious time to later in life. This is becoming a common problem that could be prevented with a little help.

Most financial professionals are interested in your life’s details a great deal. Of the almost 1,400 adults surveyed, those who currently had help from a financial professional were not only more realistic in the amount they believed they needed to save for retirement, but had more saved, than those without help.

The survey asked men and women between the ages of 40 and 64, who made at least $75,000 a year, a series of questions. People who didn’t use the help of a financial professional, were 63% more likely to say they were “uncertain” about retirement. Their financial estimates of post-retirement income were also off the mark.

On average, those who didn’t have the help of a professional, overestimated the amount they’d need later in life, and also had a great deal less saved up. It’s not hard to see how the combination of those two factors can lead to a great deal of stress in an already stressful world.

One of the more serious results of the study came from the responses of those surveyed regarding working during retirement. No one expects the baby boomer generation to go quietly into the night. In fact, more baby boomers are expected to continue working than any other previous generation. But working while you are retired should be a choice, not a necessity.

Of those without professional advice, 22% said they expected they would be forced to work after retirement, rather than choose to work. Only 9% of those with professional help said they would be forced into work.

What we perceive as “pain” is an interaction between several chemicals in the brain and spinal cord. These chemicals are called neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters conduct nerve impulses from one nerve cell to another, and on to the brain. They do this by stimulating receptors found on the surface of nerve and brain cells, which function somewhat like gates, opening and closing to allow messages to pass from one nerve cell to the next. Many pain-relieving drugs work by acting on these receptors.

Pain can be roughly divided in to two types: Acute pain, and chronic pain. Pain is described as acute when it basically doesn’t last very long – it is usually caused by an injury, illness, or surgery, and subsides as your body heals.

Chronic pain is usually said to persist for at least 6 months after your body has healed from the illness or injury that first caused the pain in question. There are forms of chronic pain that defy diagnosis. This usually adds to the emotional lows, anger, and self esteem problems that can already arise from experiencing the chronic pain in the first place. Many patients who experience chronic pain can also find that it interferes with the day to day activities of their lives.
